I keep a list of every Italian restaurant I try in Covington, partially because I'm a professional and partially because I need to know where to send people who ask for "authentic." The food here spans from Frank's, where the service is so warm you suspect they might adopt you, to Pasta Max Cafe, which has mussels so good you'll forgive the stale bread.

I've also thrown in some barbecue and a Philly cheesesteak just to keep things honest. Consider this your map to the Square and beyond.

No place made the list twice. Unless I couldn't stop going back.

Feels like family
Kids are welcome here
Food and drinks shine
Service treats you right
Come back again soon

I walked into Frank's and felt like I'd crashed a family reunion where I actually belonged. The kids are welcome, which means you can bring your chaos and they won't blink. Food and drinks shine, sure, but the service is what got me. They treat you right, like you're coming back even before you've paid. I did come back, and I'll keep coming back. It's not fancy. It's better. It's honest. If you want a meal that doesn't try to impress you with tricks, just feeds you and pats you on the back, Frank's is your spot. I left full, happy, and slightly worried they'd adopt me.

Philly cheesesteak is exceptional
Massive, fresh-to-order servings
Wings stay crispy, not greasy
Mediterranean pasta salad shines
Clean, quick, friendly service

Lit Deli isn't Italian, but I'm including it because I'm a contrarian who likes good food. The Philly cheesesteak is exceptional, which is a weird thing to say in a review about Italian restaurants. Massive, fresh-to-order servings that make you question your life choices. The wings stay crispy, not greasy, which is a miracle. The Mediterranean pasta salad shines, so I'll allow it. Clean, quick, friendly service. I felt bad for the guy next to me who ordered a salad. No, I didn't. Go for the cheesesteak. Stay for the pasta salad. Leave with regret that you didn't order two.

Fresh, hot dishes
Excellent Monday waitress
Great first-time experience
Worth a return visit

Stalvey's was a first-time experience that didn't feel like a gamble. Fresh, hot dishes came out fast, like they knew I was starving and slightly impatient. The Monday waitress was excellent, which is a specific compliment because Mondays are when everyone else is phoning it in. She remembered my drink order and didn't judge my second slice of bread. Great first impression. Worth a return visit, and I actually returned. The vibe is straightforward, no pretension, just good food and a person who cares. I'm not saying it's the best Italian in Covington, but I'm not saying it isn't.

Real Connecticut-level pasta
Handmade pasta and dressing
Steak cuts with fork
Friendly, family-style service
Beautiful date-night atmosphere

Pasta Masters Cucina brought me back to Connecticut, which is a sentence I never thought I'd write. Real Connecticut-level pasta. Handmade pasta and dressing that actually tastes like someone's grandmother, not a factory. Steak cuts with a fork, because that's how it should be. Friendly, family-style service made me feel like I was at a table, not a transaction. Beautiful date-night atmosphere that's romantic without being weird, which is a fine line. I brought a date, we both left impressed. The pasta is so good I almost cried. Almost. I'm not a crier. But I did make an involuntary noise.

Bread should be fresh daily
Scallops need thicker sauce
Best restaurant on the square
Mussels are crazy good
Worth the trip back

Pasta Max Cafe sits on the square, which means you can stagger out and fall into a shop. The bread should be fresh daily, but it wasn't. That's a complaint, but I'm over it. The scallops need a thicker sauce, noted, but the mussels are crazy good. I'd come back for the mussels alone. Best restaurant on the square, which isn't exactly a high bar, but they earned it. Worth the trip back, even with the bread betrayal. The service was fine, the wine was fine, and the mussels were ridiculous. I ate them with my hands. No regrets.

The Twelve Oaks Bed and Breakfast

The Twelve Oaks Bed and Breakfast
Highlights
Gorgeous mansion, spotless rooms
Warm, welcoming staff
Traditional, delicious breakfasts
Memorable, personal hospitality
Worth a return trip

I went to The Twelve Oaks Bed and Breakfast for a review because someone told me they do dinner sometimes, but I got breakfast, and I'm a professional, so I ate it. Gorgeous mansion, spotless rooms, like something from a movie where people have money and good taste. Warm, welcoming staff who made me feel like I was a guest, not a reviewer. Traditional, delicious breakfasts that reminded me of my grandmother, but in a good way. Memorable, personal hospitality that makes you want to stay forever. Worth a return trip, and I might just book a room. The pasta is irrelevant. This place is about hospitality.

Generous portions, wonderful flavors
Fresh salads and tiramisu
Attentive service, warm welcome
Owner checks on guests
Sausage and sauce shine

Pamendis Italian Grill gave me a portion so generous I considered a to-go box for my future self. Generous portions, wonderful flavors, but the sausage and sauce are the stars. Fresh salads and tiramisu that taste like they were made today. Attentive service, warm welcome, and the owner checks on guests, which is either charming or creepy. I found it charming. He asked if I liked the sausage. I said yes. He nodded like he'd won an argument. The tiramisu was actual tiramisu, not soggy sponge cake. I left stuffed, happy, and slightly afraid of the owner's approval.

Staff remembers your name
Go-to spot every visit
Best bar in Covington

La Trattoria is my go-to spot every visit to Covington, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. John's drinks are top tier, which means I had three. Annika treats you like family, and she remembered my name after the first time, which is terrifying and flattering. Best bar in Covington, hands down. The staff remembers your name, which is either a cult or excellent service. I'm choosing excellent service. Go for the drinks, stay for the pasta, and let John make you something strong. I left a little loose and very happy. The pasta is good, but the bar is where the magic happens.

Highlights
Real smoke flavor
Fresh, hot sides
Friendly, helpful staff
Great catering service
Easy square location

Bradley's Real Pit Barbecue isn't Italian, but I'm including it because I have a sense of humor and the review needs contrast. Real smoke flavor, not that liquid nonsense. Fresh, hot sides that taste like someone actually cooked them. Friendly, helpful staff who didn't laugh when I asked for a fork. Great catering service, which I haven't used but I trust. Easy square location, so you can stumble from La Trattoria and get a pulled pork sandwich. They don't have pasta. They don't need it. Go for the ribs. Stay for the cole slaw. I'm not sorry.

Seafood lasagna standout
Warm complimentary rolls
Cozy bistro atmosphere

Serafino's Italian Bistro is the kind of place where you bring a date and leave with a food coma. Huge portions, low prices, which is a dangerous combination. Excellent service throughout, so attentive I felt watched. The seafood lasagna is a standout, loaded with shrimp and scallops and cheese. Warm complimentary rolls that I ate too many of. Cozy bistro atmosphere that makes you want to whisper, but I didn't. I ate loud. The portion was so big I took half home and ate it cold at midnight. Worth every penny. Don't skip the rolls.

Authentic Dominican and Puerto Rican fare
Friendly staff, welcoming service
Worth the drive, delicious flavors
Empanadas and quipe standout
Generous menu variety available

El Sartén Latino isn't Italian, but I'm a reviewer who follows flavor, not geography. Authentic Dominican and Puerto Rican fare that blew my mind. Friendly staff, welcoming service, and they didn't judge me for ordering two empanadas and a quipe. The empanadas and quipe are standouts, crispy and packed with flavor. Worth the drive, even if you're not in Covington, because this food knows no borders. Generous menu variety available, so you can try something new every visit. I went back the next day. I would go back tomorrow. The pasta conspiracy continues, but I'm not mad.

Kai's top-notch recommendations
Reliable drive-thru service
Generous, consistent pizza portions
Loyal regular customer favorite

Davidos Pizza & Wings is the loyal regular's favorite, and I get it. Kai's top-notch recommendations were spot on, so I trusted him and got the special. Reliable drive-thru service, which is perfect for when you don't want to change out of pajama pants. Generous, consistent pizza portions, and the wings aren't bad either. I've been here more times than I want to admit, but they know my order. The pizza is solid, the wings are fine, and the drive-thru window is a blessing. It's not the best Italian in Covington, but it's the best comfort food after a bad day.
